Starting with iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, and tvOS 16, apps that use Apple’s video player now offer a native playback speed menu.
The default playback speed options offered by the new Apple video player are 0.5×, 1.0×, 1.25×, 1.5× and 2.0×, but developers can modify the list of speeds .
In supported iPhone and iPad apps, the playback speed menu can be reached by touching the icon with the three dots surrounded by a circle. It will also be possible to skip a few seconds forward or backward by touching the right or left part of the video being played. In supported Mac apps, the menu can be found by clicking » » » and selecting Playback Speed. In supported Apple TV apps, there is a new playback speed timer icon to the left of the subtitle icon.
This change is also optional for developers, who can then integrate Apple’s new video player into their own apps. For developers, Apple says all apps using the new SDKs for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and tvOS will automatically receive this playback speed feature with no further changes needed. Obviously, developers will be able to disable this novelty or use existing alternatives like the one used by the YouTube app.
